What is the program?

video

The beyond.uptake Data Fellows program is a six month fellowship designed to connect data professionals at non-profits, foundations, and social enterprises to experts in data science. The fellowship begins with a week in Chicago to meet with mentors, learn hard skills in data science, and network with like-minded data-for-good professionals.

At social sector organizations, there is often only one technical director responsible for managing the organization’s data. Many are self-taught data scientists making large-scale decisions through data but without much training or support from their resource-strained organizations. At beyond.uptake, we aim to change that. We provide data-for-good professionals with the tools and community they need to solve big problems in the social sector.

Why you should apply:
Data Fellows

The fellowship is specifically for data leaders in nonprofits, social enterprises, and government agencies who want to improve their hard skills in data science.

Data Fellows

We provide ongoing coaching and mentoring from Uptake’s core team as well as advisors from Uptake partners, based on fellows needs, skills, and preferences.

Data Fellows

You will join a network of data leaders and connect with other professionals in the “data for good” ecosystem.

Program Details

The next fellowship cohort kicks off in Chicago from August 7-11, 2017, and continue remotely until March 6, 2018. Fellows will then convene for a Fellows Showcase Day from March 8-9, 2018 in Chicago. Uptake covers all travel costs for fellows.

The Fellowship consists of four parts:
1

Mentor Matching

Fellows are matched to experts from the Uptake team and from Carnegie Mellon University based on their needs.

2

Workshop Week in Chicago

Fellows arrive for a week of workshops, networking events, and one-on-one mentoring on applying data science to their fields. Workshops include ‘Agile Development in Data Science,’ ‘Predictive Models in R,’ and more.

3

Ongoing Mentorship and Support

Mentors and fellows check-in regularly for six months to continue the conversations and support that began in Chicago.

4

Fellows Showcase

Fellows return to Chicago to present the progress they’ve made over the course of the fellowship to their mentors and the incoming class of new fellows.
